Most corners think press coverage is about being physical at the line. It's not. It's about your feet, your eyes, and your timing, and if one of those three is off, the receiver wins before the ball is even snapped.
Coverage Notes: 3 press-corner mistakes every DB makes
Most corners line up in press and think, "I'm gonna jam this guy and take him out of the route." That's the wrong mindset. You're not there to be tough. You're there to disrupt timing. That means your stance, your landmarks, your eyes, all of it has to be right before the ball moves. Physical play is the result of good technique, not a substitute for it.
Here's a specific thing I coach every week. Your inside foot should be up, staggered, weight forward but controlled. Why? Because when that receiver tries to release outside, your first step is already loaded. You're not reacting. You're anticipating. Most young corners bail with their hips because their feet aren't set right. Now they're chasing. Game over.
Eyes are the second thing that kills you. I see kids try to jam and watch the receiver's whole body. No. Lock in on the chest. The chest doesn't lie. Feet lie. Hands lie. Stem moves lie. The chest tells you where he's going. Train your eyes in practice until it's automatic. Can't do that in a game for the first time.
If your corner can get their feet, eyes, and timing locked in, press coverage becomes a weapon, not a gamble. Receivers stop getting free releases. Quarterbacks have to hold the ball longer. That one skill changes everything on the field. That's what we work on every session.
